How to be creative in uncertain times
At first glance, the massive job cuts at tech companies, the disappearance of commercial real estate, an inflation that is much higher than expected in the US and Canada do not bode well for the year for creative people. These are uncertain economic times, which can also have a negative impact on the cultural sphere. How can a person remain creative and create something new, even when conditions are difficult?
Everyone can be creative; painting, drawing or mastering an instrument, which was painstakingly learned at school, is only one aspect of this. These forms of creativity are often suppressed in the course of many people's lives. Career and family do not leave the necessary time to continue reading, writing or practicing the violin for 4 hours a day as an adult. Sometimes, in the middle of a life, the need to be different flares up again and a painting or pottery course is quickly booked.
The Creative Mind
Today, visiting a museum, the longing for events, concerts, shared experiences, for the time with Covid, which turned everything upside down, is now being lived to the full again. Everything becomes an event, participation is important, the experience in the community, with personalized offer.
But what is really creative?
The art and literature market will also change massively as a result of a specific AI taking over all the tasks necessary in human life. Multimedia exhibitions, perception in VR and AR applications offer a completely different art experience. What remains is the individual human being, who no longer has to calculate and design precisely, as AI will do this for them. The media landscape will develop so quickly in the direction of social networks, blogs and AI-powered news apps that only individualized news will be fed to the user via an end device, without television or classic media stations. The layoffs in the media sector, Bell Media in Canada just cuts 4.8K jobs, ends multiple television newscasts, makes programs cuts and sells 45 radio stations as part of a comprehensive restructuring program, and the decline in newspaper readership, not just physical newspapers, but also in the use of newspaper websites, clearly shows this trend.
Reading is sexy
Is it then necessary to be creative at all? A collapse of creative human performance would lead to monotony. Reading remains the basis for a creative existence, especially in turbulent times, in order to enable new ideas, products and a new way of living together. Whether it's a printed book or an ebook, the renaissance of reading among GenZ, the passion for opera and classical music in these generation and the many digital events show how, despite adverse circumstances, an enormous economic upheaval and an insecure society, human creativity, the desire to live out new things, is the key to happiness, satisfaction and social prosperity.
Embracing Change and Adaptability
Adversity often presents a unique set of problems. However, in these challenges lies the seed of opportunity. Those who are creative in uncertain times are adept at adapting to change. This requires a level of comfort with the unknown and a willingness to pivot strategies quickly. By being flexible in thought and action, new paths are forged and novel approaches to age-old predicaments emerge.
Finding Creative Solutions to Challenges
An effective way to approach this is through a structured program of unbundling problems, reframing them, and then considering a wide array of potential solutions. Take, for example, the COVID-19 outbreak, which required unprecedented adjustments. Some businesses opted to shift their production lines to create essential medical equipment, while others rapidly adopted remote work models. Each required a creative reimagining of the status quo.
Cultivating a Growth Mindset
Creativity flourishes in environments that foster growth. This mindset is grounded in the belief that intelligence, skills, and personal attributes can be developed over time through dedication and hard work. Embracing this philosophy allows individuals to break free from self-imposed limitations and consider a broader spectrum of possibilities.
Seeing Failure as an Opportunity for Growth
Failures and setbacks are inevitable in uncertain times, but by reframing them as learnings, creativity is unhinged. The idea is to view hurdles as stepping stones rather than roadblocks. If you've ever heard the story of Thomas Edison’s one thousand failed attempts at the light bulb, you grasp the power of resilience in the face of disappointment. Each perceived failure was a lesson in what didn't work, bringing him closer to the successful solution.
Creating a Supportive Environment
Human beings are social creatures, and our environment profoundly influences our creative potential. A supportive network is an incubator for creative thought, where ideas can be shared without fear of judgment and constructive feedback can flourish.
Surrounding Yourself with Like-Minded Individuals
Joining communities that share your values and interests is a powerful ally in your creative journey. These can be in the form of professional networks, meetups, or online forums where members can provide encouragement and spur creative thinking. In-person or virtual ‘mastermind groups’ can be particularly effective, offering diverse perspectives and collective problem-solving.
Practicing Mindfulness and Self-Care
The mind is the birthplace of creativity, and it must be nurtured just as the body. Practices like mindfulness and self-care provide the necessary care and space to let the imaginative juices flow freely.
Taking Time for Self-Reflection and Relaxation
The creative process often benefits from a quiet mind. Scheduling regular time for introspection allows for the synthesis of ideas and the discovery of new, innovative connections. Additionally, practices like meditation and yoga can help calm the turbulent waters of anxious thoughts, creating a calm mental space where creative ideas can flourish.
Stimulating Your Imagination
Just as a muscle grows stronger with exercise, so does the mind with stimulation. Here, we explore methods to broaden the imagination and increase creative output.
Exposing Yourself to New Experiences and Perspectives
Novelty is the lifeblood of creativity. Expose yourself to different cultures, ideas, and experiences. Travel—either physically or virtually - read widely, watch thought - provoking movies, and engage with art. Each of these activities presents new perspectives, which inform and enrich your own creative process.
